Acne before and after using smash skin simple skincare products

Acne, the ultimate rebel without a cause in the world of skincare. It's like that uninvited guest crashing the party on your face, leaving behind a trail of irritation, frustration, and those pesky post-acne battle scars. But fear not, because at Smash, we're flipping the script on acne with a revolutionary skincare routine that kicks butt and takes names.

So What Is Acne Even?

A pimple doesn't just magically appear out of thin air; it's a complex process that unfolds beneath the surface with three basic factors. It all starts when your sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands in your pores) go into overdrive—whether due to hormonal fluctuations, genetics, or environmental factors. This excess oil [1], along with dead skin cells [2] and debris, forms a sticky concoction that clogs up your hair follicles, creating the perfect breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria [3]. As these bacteria multiply, they trigger inflammation, leading to those angry red bumps we know all too well. From the initial formation of a comedone (clogged pore) to the inflammatory response that forms whiteheads, blackheads, papules (pimple without pus), pustules (pimple with pus), or even deeper cysts, the journey of acne is anything but simple. It's a multifaceted process influenced by a bunch of different factors, but armed with the right skincare arsenal, you can disrupt this acne cycle and emerge victorious in the battle for clear skin.

The Science Behind Treating It.

[Skip this part if you don't identify as a nerd and only came here for product recommendations.]

This is how we're crashing this acne party with some serious skincare ammo attacking all three of the above-mentioned factors (oil, dead skin cells and bacteria).

Let's have a look at the Ingredients that will wage war for you and how they fit into your routine:

  1. Salicylic Acid:
The secret weapon. Salicylic Acid is a powerhouse ingredient in skincare renowned for its acne-fighting powers, derives its potency from its beta hydroxy acid (BHA) properties. This allows it to penetrate deep into the pores, treating the problem at the root. The magic of salicylic acid lies in its ability to exfoliate both the skin's surface and inside the pore linings. By dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells together, it effortlessly sloughs away the buildup of debris, excess oil, and other impurities that can clog pores and lead to acne formation. This gentle exfoliation also helps prevent future breakouts by promoting the shedding of dead skin cells before they have a chance to block pores. Moreover, salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ally in calming redness, swelling, and inflammation. By reducing inflammation, it also creates an environment where acne-causing bacteria struggle to thrive eliminating the chances of new acne lesions. Additionally, salicylic acid aids in regulating oil production. By effectively reducing excess sebum production, it helps minimise the risk of pores becoming clogged, further reducing the likelihood of breakouts.
  2. Retinol:
The rebel with a cause. It's the most studied skincare ingredient and arguably the most effective. Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is renowned for its remarkable benefits in skincare, including its ability to effectively combat acne. Often hailed as the gold standard in anti-aging skincare, retinol's acne-fighting properties are equally impressive, making it a valuable weapon in the battle against breakouts. One of the primary ways retinol helps with acne is by promoting cell turnover. By accelerating the shedding of dead skin cells and promoting the generation of new, healthy cells, retinol helps prevent the buildup of dead skin cells that can clog pores and contribute to acne formation. It not only keeps pores clear but also helps to smooth the skin's texture, reducing the appearance of acne scars and other imperfections over time. Another key benefit of retinol in acne treatment is its ability to regulate sebum production. By modulating oil production in the skin, retinol helps minimise excess oiliness, which can contribute to clogged pores and acne flare-ups. By controlling sebum production, retinol helps to address one of the underlying factors contributing to acne development, helping to keep breakouts at bay. Additionally, retinol has been shown to have comedolytic properties, meaning it helps prevent the formation of comedones, or pore blockages, which are a precursor to acne lesions such as blackheads and whiteheads. By keeping pores clear and preventing the formation of comedones, retinol helps reduce the risk of breakouts. It's potent but there's nothing that is quite like it.
  3. Azelaic Acid:
This ingredient is the unsung hero in the skincare world. It offers a unique combination of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and exfoliating properties, making it a valuable asset in the fight against acne. One of the primary ways azelaic acid helps with acne is by its ability to reduce inflammation. Acne is often accompanied by redness, swelling, and irritation, which can exacerbate the condition and lead to further breakouts. Azelaic acid works to calm inflammation and promote healing. Moreover, it exhibits potent antibacterial properties, making it effective at targeting the bacteria responsible for acne formation. By reducing the population of acne-causing bacteria on the skin, azelaic acid helps prevent new breakouts from forming. In addition to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, azelaic acid also acts as an exfoliant, helping to unclog pores and prevent the formation of new acne lesions. Furthermore, azelaic acid has been shown to have a skin-brightening effect, making it beneficial for addressing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and acne scars. By inhibiting the production of melanin (pigment), azelaic acid helps fade existing marks and promote a more even-toned complexion.
  4. AHAs:
Common alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) include glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid. AHAs are renowned for their exfoliating properties and have been widely used in skincare formulations to address various skin concerns, including acne. One of the primary ways AHAs help with acne is by promoting exfoliation of the skin's outermost layer by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells allowing it to shed. This exfoliating action helps unclog pores, prevent the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), and reduce the likelihood of acne breakouts. AHAs also stimulate cell turnover, encouraging the skin to generate new, healthy cells more rapidly which not only helps prevent pores from becoming clogged but also promotes the healing of existing acne lesions, reducing their duration and severity over time. Additionally, it can help fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) left behind by acne. AHAs also have humectant properties, meaning they attract and retain hydration in the skin which strengthens the skin's natural moisture barrier, improving its overall health and resilience. This enhanced barrier function is particularly beneficial for acne-prone skin, as it helps prevent moisture loss and reduces the risk of irritation and inflammation.
  5. Antioxidants:
The silent assassin. Known for their ability to neutralise harmful molecules called free radicals. By neutralising these free radicals, it helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress which is critical for the ageing process (acne will clear but ageing is inevitable). Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, leading to oxidative stress, inflammation, and accelerated ageing. Acne is characterised by inflammation of the hair follicles and surrounding skin, leading to redness, swelling, and discomfort. Environmental factors such as pollution, UV radiation, and oxidative stress can exacerbate inflammation and worsen acne symptoms. Antioxidants work by scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, thereby calming inflammation and soothing irritated skin. Furthermore, antioxidants help protect the skin from UV damage.. Sun exposure can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), making sun protection essential for acne-prone skin. Additionally, antioxidants have been shown to promote collagen synthesis and repair damaged skin cells, leading to improved skin texture, tone, and elasticity. Acne lesions can leave behind scars and uneven pigmentation, affecting the overall appearance of the skin. Antioxidants help stimulate collagen production and accelerate the healing process, reducing the severity of acne scars and promoting a smoother, more even complexion.

Side Note - While addressing acne externally is crucial, it's equally important to recognize the internal factors that can contribute to its development. Consuming high-glycemic foods, such as refined carbohydrates and sugary snacks, can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, triggering a cascade of hormonal responses that may exacerbate acne. Elevated insulin levels, in response to these spikes, can stimulate the production of androgens, hormones that play a key role in oil production and pore clogging. Stabilise your blood sugar levels to reduce the risk of acne flare-ups from within tackling the problem topically and internally.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how acne gets kicked off the group chat leaving you to call the shots.
